Synopsis

In the olden days of Beijing, Xiangzi worked tirelessly as a carriage driver, using his sheer strength to pull rickshaw and earn his living. His days began early and ended late. After three long years of saving up, he finally managed to buy a brand new cart of his own, breaking free from the factory's exploitation. However, fate had other plans for Xiangzi. His new cart was robbed and destroyed by bandits, leaving him devastated. Meanwhile, Tiger Girl, the daughter of the carriage factory owner, fell in love with Xiangzi and seduced him after getting him intoxicated. Desperate to escape Tiger Girl's grasp, Xiangzi went to work as a rickshaw boy for Professor Cao. However, his misfortunes continued as he was robbed of all his money by detectives. In the depths of his anguish, Xiangzi was forced to marry Tiger Girl, who tragically died in childbirth soon after. Adding to his misery, Xiaofuzi, a neighbor girl whom Xiangzi had grown to love, also took her own life by hanging herself. Everything he went through ultimately defeated him.
