Drama 1959 China 85'

Synopsis

In 1931, Hangjia Lake in Zhejiang Province was thrust into turmoil as the Japanese invaded China. The small town rallied behind a movement to boycott Japanese goods, but Boss Lin saw an opportunity to profit from the chaos. Despite the backlash, he brazenly sold Japanese goods and even drove out his competitors using cutthroat tactics like discounting and offering "one-yuan goods." Yet, his greed proved his undoing as he fell prey to extortion by the bank and Kuomintang officials,, ultimately leading to his financial ruin. The laborers, such as Zhu Santai and Widow Zhang, also suffered from the fallout. The film captures Boss Lin's tragic fall from grace, illustrating how he was caught in the web of bureaucratic capitalism while exploiting those weaker than him.
