Synopsis

Xiao Jianqiu, a disenchanted young intellectual, arrived at Furong Town Middle School to teach, seeking solace in the simple life of a teacher. Fate, however, had other plans. He met the sorrowful Widow Wen, whose life had been marred by tragedy and misfortune. Despite the social pressure, he extended his compassion and helped her daughter, Cailian, enroll in school. His heart was also captured by the charming Tao Lan. Yet, the dark shadows of gossip and slander crept in, poisoning the purity of their connections. Xiao Jianqiu knew he must make a sacrifice, and he chose to wed Widow Wen, a move that he hoped would save her from further disgrace. But, the weight of public scorn proved too much, and Widow Wen took her own life by plunging into the river. Furious and broken-hearted, Xiao Jianqiu departed from Furong Town, and Tao Lan followed him. His selflessness and kindness shone a light on the plight of the old intellectuals, who struggled under the weight of traditional values and feudalism, ultimately facing tragic ends.
