At 6:30pm local time, on August 19, 2023, the China Film Festival was launched in Johannesburg, South Africa. Guests and more than 500 audience members enjoyed the opening film “The Captain”.

Eleven outstanding Chinese movies are slated for screening during the four-day event. They include the action film “Ride On” starring Jackie Chan who is popular among African people,  the animation “I Am What I Am” which showcases the Chinese folk tradition of lion dancing , and the  Cantonese Opera film White Snake which highlights Chinese aesthetics. In addition, Beijing 2022, a documentary on the hosting of Winter Olympics is also featured among other works.
